Casa Samambaia (Fern House) is an artistic-cultural and socio-environmental collective of artists and environmentalists created in June 2020, in Raiz da Serra, in Rio de Janeiro.

Our goal is to develop environmental and cultural projects to work in alliance with our local communities finding alternatives to preserve and clean-up ecosystems of the tropical rain forest and consolidating partnerships for the preservation of its waterfalls and springs.

For us, it is extremely important to preserve the environmental and cultural heritage through methodologies and positive actions of articulation of the community with its surroundings, with respect for its pluralities.

We believe that art has a fundamental role in the construction of the human being and on preserving their multi-identities. Art is our integration point as a mechanism of social change, environmental preservation, and for legitimization of the knowledge of traditional communities, in the region.

Mission: Our mission is to create bridges between national and international institutions aimed at maintaining cultural memory and environmental assets, and that are in consensus with the particularities of the traditional communities of Raiz da Serra, on the “Caminho do Ouro” (The Gold Trail).

Vision: Recognize that the articulation and connection between bodies responsible for preservation is capable of creating a deeper and more positive impact on socio-cultural and environmental development. This social communication enables the strengthening of projects for their achievements with traditional communities.

Values: Respect _ cultural, environmental and social awareness;

Accountability _ Excellence and effectiveness in managing community cultural programming;

The beginning...

The destructive impact caused by to the ecosystem (springs and waterfalls  included), as well as the abandonment of the Caminho do Ouro, and the precarious functioning of the railway line that connects Saracuruna to Vila Inhomirim station. With all of that pointed out, the artist together with Joana Bueno, invited Andrea Mello to form the Casa Samambaia Cultural and Environmental Collective. The Collective’s name is dedicated to the ferns which are the abundant native vegetation of Raiz da Serra region and the Atlantic Forests.
